This movie Vonda N. Based on the 1997 novel The Moon and the Sun by McIntyre. The earliest development for the film began in 1999 when producer Michael London planned to acquire the filming rights. He said he was drawn to the strange association of a completely fictitious creature in this uniquely historical world.

London offered the film to the Jim Henson Company, which would release the film through its film company, Jim Henson Pictures. Theater director Christopher Renshaw signed on to direct, while Laura Harrington would write the screenplay with McIntyre's participation. Stephanie Allen and Christine Belson signed on as executive producers for Jim Henson Pictures. 

Sony with Jim Henson Company After ending their joint venture Jim Henson Pictures, production was put on hold until filmmaker Bill Mechanic joined the production and Walt signed a five-year deal with the company in December 2001. Revived the film with Disney Pictures. 

Mechanic planned to begin pre-production for the film in early 2002, starring Natalie Portman, James Shams to revise the script, and possibly to direct. For Gregory Hoblit. The Jim Henson Company will also continue as a supporter of Ducer

In August 2013, it was announced that Sean McNamara would direct the film. Casting included Pierce Brosnan as King Louis XIV, Fan Bingbing as the mermaid, and Bill Nighy as Pere de Chase, the character created for the film. Nighy pulled out of the film due to scheduling conflicts and was replaced by William Hurt weeks before filming. 

Mechanic, still remaining on film, also revised the script with Barry Berman and Ronald Bass. Chinese film company Kylin Films invested $20.5 million in the film, making it China's largest financial contribution to a non-studio film produced outside China. In June 2020, it was announced that Julie Andrews would narrate the film.

Principal photography on The Moon and the Sun began on location at the Palace of Versailles, France in early April 2014. After two weeks of shooting in France, production moved to Australia to shoot on location in Docklands Studio Melbourne and Melbourne, Victoria. 

Filming began on 23 April in and around the Melbourne Docklands. From 6 to 8 May, filming took place at the Melbourne City Marina on the long ship Enterprise for scenes set aboard a ship in the North Sea on a stormy night in 1648. On 2 May 2014, scenes were filmed at the Old Quad. The University of Melbourne, with the set turned into Versailles Abbey. Filming in Australia ended in late May 2014.

The King's Daughter (previously titled The Moon and the Sun) is an upcoming American action-adventure fantasy film directed by Sean McNamara from a screenplay by Barry Berman and James Sheamus. This is Vonda N. McIntyre's 1997 novel The Moon and the Sun. The film stars Pierce Brosnan as King Louis XIV, Kaya Scodelario as Marie-Joseph, and Benjamin Walker as Yves de la Croix.

Principal photography began in early April 2014 in Versailles, France. After two weeks of shooting in France, production began in Melbourne, Australia on 23 April. Shooting ended at the end of May 2014.

It is scheduled to be released by Gravitas Ventures on January 21, 2022.

On August 15, 2014, Paramount Pictures announced the film's release date as April 10, 2015, while international sales would be handled by Good Universe. Just three weeks before the film's wide release, Paramount canceled without specifying a future release date. 

A source close to the film claimed that more time is needed to complete the special effects work. The film was later renamed The King's Daughter and on June 1, 2020, Arclight Films acquired distribution during the 2020 Cannes virtual event.  In October 2021, it was announced that Gravitas Ventures acquired the distribution rights to the film, and it was set for release on January 21, 2022.
